Essential Oils for Nausea and Motion Sickness: What the Evidence Shows

Bottom line: peppermint or ginger aroma may reduce nausea in some clinical settings, but results are inconsistent and mostly concern surgery or chemotherapy. That is not evidence that essential oils prevent motion sickness.

This guide does not recommend swallowing essential oil. Persistent vomiting, dehydration or serious associated symptoms need medical advice.

Nausea has many causes

The NHS lists infection, migraine, medicines, pregnancy, reflux, anxiety and motion among possible causes of nausea. Evidence from one cause may not transfer to another.

Postoperative nausea follows anaesthesia and surgery. Chemotherapy-induced nausea occurs in a different clinical context, often alongside preventive medicines.

Motion sickness arises when sensory information about movement conflicts. A fragrance trial after surgery does not show that it corrects this process.

What reviews say about peppermint inhalation

A Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence and no clear pooled benefit for peppermint aromatherapy versus placebo at five minutes after surgery. Adverse-event reporting was limited.

A 2024 meta-analysis reported preliminary benefits for postoperative nausea but rated the certainty low. Heterogeneity and potential bias restricted confidence.

A 2025 review found promising results across postoperative, chemotherapy and pregnancy settings. The review analysed these populations separately because they are not one condition.

Another systematic review reported positive aromatherapy findings across nausea studies. Variation in interventions and study quality remains central to interpretation.

Individual peppermint studies

A postoperative study found that patients often liked peppermint aromatherapy, but the between-group result was not statistically significant. Satisfaction and effectiveness are related but different outcomes.

A chemotherapy study reported lower nausea, vomiting and retching with peppermint oil. It concerned patients receiving cancer treatment within a defined protocol.

A trial of peppermint and lemon aroma used a diffuser during chemotherapy-related nausea care. A blend result cannot identify which component contributed.

These studies do not establish a universal dose. Smell preference, standard anti-nausea medicines and the comparison condition can influence results.

Ginger aroma is not oral ginger

A controlled chemotherapy study found no significant anti-nausea benefit from ginger aromatherapy. Negative or uncertain findings belong beside positive ones.

A postoperative study reported improvement after inhaled ginger essential oil. Its design and setting limit transfer to travel sickness.

A randomised chemotherapy study also examined ginger essential-oil inhalation. It does not answer whether ginger aroma prevents symptoms on a boat or in a car.

A motion-sickness study tested oral ginger and gastric responses. Ginger rhizome taken by mouth is chemically and pharmacologically different from inhaled essential oil.

A systematic review of consumed ginger covers gastrointestinal outcomes and oral doses. It must not be cited as proof for a diffuser.

What helps motion sickness

The NHS recommends reducing conflicting motion cues, looking at a stable point, fresh air and lying down when possible. It also advises avoiding heavy meals and reading during travel.

A pharmacist can advise about travel-sickness medicines and whether they are suitable. Some can cause drowsiness and interact with alcohol or other medicines.

Test any strategy before a journey where impairment would matter. The driver should not use a product or medicine that reduces alertness.

A strong scent can itself provoke nausea or headache. Do not expose other passengers without agreement, especially in an enclosed vehicle.

Do not use aroma to delay treatment

Nausea may be a minor symptom or a sign of a problem needing care. The cause, duration and associated symptoms matter more than the popularity of an oil.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, severe chest or abdominal pain, confusion, a stiff neck, sudden severe headache or suspected poisoning.

Get medical advice for signs of dehydration, persistent vomiting, pregnancy concerns or symptoms after a head injury. Cancer-treatment nausea should be discussed with the oncology team.

Safety

Do not swallow peppermint, ginger or another essential oil. A food name does not make the concentrated volatile oil safe as a drink.

Poison Control describes poisoning, aspiration and skin or eye injury risks from essential oils. Store bottles securely and follow expert advice after an exposure.

Use fragrance only where ventilation is possible. Stop if it worsens nausea, wheeze, headache or eye and throat irritation.

Pregnancy requires product-specific advice. A few aromatherapy pregnancy trials do not establish safety for every oil, dose and route.

My verdict

Peppermint and ginger aromas have a mixed but developing evidence base for nausea in selected clinical settings. The average effects and certainty remain modest.

Evidence for essential oils in motion sickness is much weaker. Use established travel strategies and pharmacist advice, and never substitute oil inhalation for necessary anti-nausea care.
