What the evidence shows
Tea tree oil and some of its components show antimicrobial activity in laboratory work. That makes the claim biologically interesting, but it does not demonstrate a meaningful health benefit from a household diffuser.[1] [2] [3] [4]

We found no persuasive human or occupied-home evidence that an essential-oil diffuser reduces infection. Chamber research instead confirms that diffusers add volatile organic compounds and particles to indoor air. How the claim is usually made
Laboratory research reviewed by Carson and colleagues found that tea tree oil can inhibit some microorganisms when directly tested at chosen concentrations. Marketing then jumps from that observation to the idea that a consumer diffuser will disinfect the air throughout an occupied room.
Why the laboratory result is not enough
A dish or test chamber can expose microbes directly to a controlled concentration. A lived-in room contains people, animals, surfaces, airflow and a much larger volume of air. A concentration that changes microbes in a laboratory is not automatically effective—or tolerable—when dispersed around occupants.
What diffusion adds to air
Measurements from controlled chamber testing and a residential indoor-air study show that ultrasonic diffusers emit volatile organic compounds and particles. That observation does not prove that every normal use is harmful, but it does make “purification” a misleading description: the device is adding compounds, not simply removing contamination.
My interpretation
I found no persuasive human or occupied-home evidence that tea tree diffusion reduces infection. Ventilation, appropriate cleaning and public-health measures should not be replaced by a fragrant oil.
