    What the evidence shows

    Tea tree oil and some of its components show antimicrobial activity in laboratory work. That makes the claim biologically interesting, but it does not demonstrate a meaningful health benefit from a household diffuser.[1] [2] [3] [4]

    Important limitations

    We found no persuasive human or occupied-home evidence that an essential-oil diffuser reduces infection. Chamber research instead confirms that diffusers add volatile organic compounds and particles to indoor air. Laboratory concentrations and direct contact with microbes are not equivalent to safe airborne use around people.[1] [2] [3] [4]

    Safety is separate from evidence: Do not use an essential-oil diffuser as infection control or in place of ventilation, cleaning or public-health guidance. Tea tree oil must not be swallowed, and exposure can irritate some people and animals.

    How the claim is usually made

    Laboratory research reviewed by Carson and colleagues found that tea tree oil can inhibit some microorganisms when directly tested at chosen concentrations. Marketing then jumps from that observation to the idea that a consumer diffuser will disinfect the air throughout an occupied room.

    Why the laboratory result is not enough

    A dish or test chamber can expose microbes directly to a controlled concentration. A lived-in room contains people, animals, surfaces, airflow and a much larger volume of air. A concentration that changes microbes in a laboratory is not automatically effective—or tolerable—when dispersed around occupants.

    What diffusion adds to air

    Measurements from controlled chamber testing and a residential indoor-air study show that ultrasonic diffusers emit volatile organic compounds and particles. That observation does not prove that every normal use is harmful, but it does make “purification” a misleading description: the device is adding compounds, not simply removing contamination.

    My interpretation

    I found no persuasive human or occupied-home evidence that tea tree diffusion reduces infection. Ventilation, appropriate cleaning and public-health measures should not be replaced by a fragrant oil.

    Systematic reviews of controlled trials have reported improvements in subjective sleep measures after aromatherapy. Lavender is frequently studied, and inhalation is a common method. The direction of the findings is encouraging enough to take the claim seriously.[1] [2] [3]

    Important limitations

    Trials vary in oil, dose, delivery method, population and duration. Many are small, blinding to a noticeable scent is difficult, and outcomes are often self-reported rather than objectively measured. Evidence about aromatherapy in a study cannot automatically be transferred to every consumer diffuser or to clinical insomnia.[1] [2] [3]

    Safety is separate from evidence: Lavender aroma can cause headache or coughing in some people. Stop using a diffuser if it worsens breathing, headache or irritation, and do not use it instead of assessment or treatment for persistent sleep problems.

    The claim being tested

    Online advice often compresses “lavender helped participants report better sleep” into “lavender treats insomnia”. Those statements are not equivalent. This review scores the narrower outcome most directly addressed by the controlled trials gathered in a 2019 systematic review: perceived sleep quality.

    Why the result is promising

    A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials reported an overall improvement in sleep-quality measures after aromatherapy, while a 2024 meta-analysis in older adults also reported an improvement. Lavender is one of the oils studied most often, and inhalation is a common delivery method. The findings are encouraging enough to take the claim seriously.

    Why the score stops at 6/10

    The trials reviewed in 2019 and the studies analysed in 2024 vary in population, dose, delivery, duration and outcome tool. Many trials are small. A noticeable scent also makes convincing blinding difficult, so expectations can influence self-reported sleep. Some test a patch, inhaler or bedside aroma rather than an ordinary room diffuser.

    Most importantly, subjective improvement is not the same as objectively measured sleep or successful treatment of clinical insomnia. The evidence earns an upper-amber score, not a treatment claim.

    My interpretation

    I think lavender can reasonably be described as a potentially helpful part of a wind-down routine for some people, provided the scent agrees with them. I would not describe it as a proven sleep treatment, and I would not use it to delay assessment of persistent sleep problems.

    A systematic review of preoperative trials and a broader meta-analysis of aromatherapy trials reported lower anxiety scores in some clinical settings. Lavender is frequently represented, and a review focused on inhalation studies gives the claim more relevance to scented-air use than evidence from massage alone would provide.

    Why uncertainty remains

    The reviewed trials use different oils, concentrations, comparison groups, durations and anxiety scales. A recognisable aroma is difficult to blind. Short follow-up and situational outcomes do not establish lasting benefit, and a mixed aromatherapy result cannot always be attributed to lavender alone.

    My interpretation

    An aroma may be a reasonable comfort measure before a stressful event if the person enjoys it and can use it safely. The evidence does not justify presenting lavender as a replacement for mental-health care or as a treatment for an anxiety disorder.

    Important limitations

    The evidence concerns menthol delivered experimentally, not ordinary peppermint oil diffused in a home. A change in sensation is not the same as improved nasal airflow, treatment of infection or relief of the underlying cause of congestion.[1] [2]

    Safety is separate from evidence: Peppermint aromatherapy does not replace appropriate care for breathing difficulty. NCCIH says there is not enough reliable information to determine the safety or side effects of inhaled peppermint oil; menthol should not be applied to the face of infants or young children.

    The claim being tested

    Peppermint’s cooling sensation can make a stuffy nose feel clearer. The exact question is whether that sensory effect means the nasal airway has physically opened or the underlying allergy, infection or other cause has improved.

    What the human evidence suggests

    A controlled experiment of inhaled menthol found that it reduced the sensation of respiratory discomfort. That offers a plausible explanation for the familiar subjective feeling. It does not test an ordinary peppermint-oil diffuser, and it does not establish treatment of congestion.

    Perception and airflow are different outcomes. A strong cooling signal may make breathing feel more comfortable without resolving swelling, mucus or the condition causing symptoms. The limited and indirect evidence therefore receives 3/10.

    My interpretation

    I would describe peppermint as capable of producing a clearer-feeling sensation, not as a decongestant proven to open the nose. New, severe or unexplained breathing difficulty needs appropriate attention rather than stronger exposure to a scent.
