How To Make Essential Oil Room Sprays That Smell Amazing

Essential oils are becoming increasingly more popular as the years go by, and they have already been used for centuries.

Studies show that even Ancient Egyptians used aromatic and therapeutic oils as early as 4500 BC for cosmetic use, and in healing ointments.

For hundreds of years, humans have been using essential oils and plant extracts in healing potions, medicines, make up and skincare products. The first recorded uses of essential oils were in Persia, Egypt and India.

These countries would trade scent-filled oils and healing ointments with other countries such as the places within the Orient.

It is thought that these original oils were made by preparing plants, flowers, roots and other natural extracts in fatty oils ready for use.

Even today, we still use essential oils for their powerful scents and helpful properties and benefits.

Different essential oils have different purposes. Whilst most are able to alleviate stress, calm the body and soothe the soul, some even have health benefits and aid digestive issues, along with skin problems and conditions.

For the most part, essential oils are best inhaled, as you can really enjoy, absorb and relish in all of the scents and healing powers of the oil.

As a result, most people use essential oils in the form of room sprays. These can brighten up the room, filling the air with scents that calm the mind and enchant the senses.

So, why not make your own? With this guide, you will know everything there is to know about essential oil room sprays and how to make your own sprays that smell amazing!

What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is actually a compound that has been extracted from a plant or nature. The oil is used to capture the plant’s essence, scent and extract.

These extracts are distilled by various methods, such as cold pressing to preserve the scent, properties and essence of the plant, concentrating it down. This essence is then mixed with a carrier oil ready for use.

Most essential oils are inhaled, diffused or diluted into various items such as candles, skin creams and treatments. They should not be applied to the skin directly, as they can cause burning or irritation.

Oils should only be applied to the skin if they are diluted. For instance, you can add a few drops of essential oils into your nice, hot bath for an aromatherapy effect.

Things you will need:

Once you have purchased all of the required equipment, you can start thinking about making your very own, personalized essential oils room spray, ready to liven up your living space!

The first thing you will need to gather is the spray bottle that you are going to use.

Amber bottles are so fashionable at the moment as they look great in your home, but also protect the essence of the oil from the harmful rays of the sun.

You can purchase amber spray bottles here in a large size or a smaller, more compact spray bottle.

You can even purchase essential oil room spray making sets that come with the bottles in various sizes, along with handy labels for your creations.

With your bottles chosen, you will need to decide which oils you want to use. You can mix a few different scents and essential oils, or stick to your favorite if you want.

For a calming room spray that can help send you to sleep, we recommend using lavender essential oils. If you want a room spray that smells wonderful, clean and powerful, then try using a sandalwood essential oil.

For this recipe, we are going to use our favorite scent; sandalwood. However, this pairs beautifully with Bergamot or grapefruit for a sweeter, uplifting scent that complements the strong, warm and spiced scent of Sandalwood.

So, with the Sandalwood essential oil and the Bergamot essential oil at the ready, open up the spray bottle.

Then, add in about 20 drops of the essential oils. Once you have put in the essential oils, you will want to fill up the bottle to about halfway with distilled water.

Then, fill the other half of the bottle up with pure witch hazel. These measurements do not have to be exact, but they should be to about a 1:1 ratio for the best results.

The witch hazel will also help the oil, the essence and the water to combine into one. However, you will want to give the spray bottle a bit of a shake to mix it up well together.

We also recommend leaving a small gap at the top of the bottle to add in some dried flowers or greenery to improve the scent even more, and make your essential oil room spray look absolutely divine.

Finally, screw the lid of the spray bottle back on. Then, stick some labels onto your bottle to really finish it off, and help you identify what the scents are.

We love the look of these black, ornate labels which will compliment the amber colored bottles really well.

However, we also found these easy to use spray bottles labels with herbs and spices around the sides, which will be perfect for labeling your essential oil room sprays.

With your bottle labeled and at the ready, you can start spraying it around your home to improve the scent and make the place seem really inviting and relaxing.

If you spray and find that the smell is not that strong, then simply add a few more drops of the essential oils that you used to give it a more bursting aroma!

Top tips for making essential oil room sprays

For the best results, follow some of our top tips of how to make essential oil room sprays.

For instance, you should always use distilled water, as this will be much purer than tap water, with no bacteria or mold inside that could affect how your room spray turns out.

You should also be using only 100% pure essential oils as these will release the most aroma and have all of those wonderful healing properties that you desire.

Some cheaper essential oils are not made of the pure extract, and will have additives and artificial fragrances that can ruin the plant essence. This means that they may not be as effective, or may release unsatisfactory scents.

Finally, always shake well after adding in all of your ingredients. This will ensure that the essential oil spray is properly mixed.

Then, give it a quick test to see if the scent is strong enough, and add a few more droplets of oil if needed!
